About:

$25 - Adults $10 - Under 18 As part of the 25th season in the Smithsonian at Little Washington Series, renowned musician Kenneth Slowik will present a special celebration of Johann Sebastian Bach. Mr. Slowik is artistic director of the Smithsonian Chamber Music Society. A highly-valued component of all concerts in the Smithsonian at Little Washington series is the commentary provided by Ken Slowik throughout the program. His remarks shed light on the glorious music and the life and times of the featured composers. In 2011, Mr. Slowik was the recipient of the Smithsonian Secretary’s Distinguished Research Lecture Award, and the remarks during the concerts at the Theatre at Washington, Virginia are generally an abbreviated version of the talk which precedes each of the concerts heard in Washington, D.C. Interestingly, the planning of the April 2nd program hinged on Mr. Slowik's potential acquisition of a particular instrument. . . A NOTE FROM KEN SLOWIK: "I am pleased to report that I have indeed been able to purchase a rare Flemish or Dutch 5-string violoncello piccolo from about 1720. It is thus exactly contemporary with Bach's great set of six suites for violoncello solo, the last of which, though routinely played on a "normal" cello these days, was actually intended for a 5-string instrument. Therefore the first half of my program will consist of a short introduction of this instrument, and a performance of J.S. Bach's Suite in D Major, BWV 1012, on it. In the second half of the program, I will play two solo harpsichord works, the Partita in B-flat Major, BWV 825, and conclude with the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, BWV 903." Adults - $25 Under 18 - $10
