Foundations of Medicinal Herbalism

Foundations of Medicinal Herbalism is one of Green Comfort School of Herbal Medicine's primary programs. This course requires students to spend one Saturday a month (the third Saturday of each month) over the course of 10 months at Green Comfort School of Herbal Medicine, starting September 15th, 2018. Classes run from 9 AM – 5:30 PM on the Saturdays we have class.

This course will explore each body system and its physiology, actions, and constituents of the plants and how their medicine can be applied to various ailments and diseases in the body. We will discover the many primary and secondary indications of an extensive materia medica of plants which have been used since the beginning of time. Students will develop a protocol per body system, integrating the knowledge into a usable form. Everyone will create a final project inspired by personal growth and digestion of the information and receive a certificate once all course requirements are complete.

This training is for anyone who has a curiosity for plant medicine and wants to learn the foundations of herbalism so they can apply this knowledge in their lives, communities, and family. No prior herbalism or medical training is required, although we do have a lot of healthcare professionals who take this course to augment their practice. Should you have an interest in becoming a registered Herbalist with the American Herbalists Guild, this is a good starting point.

Herbal Apothecary Course

Herbal Apothecary is one of Green Comfort School of Herbal Medicine's primary programs. This course requires students to spend one Sunday a month (the third Sunday of each month) over the course of 10 months at Green Comfort School of Herbal Medicine, starting September 16th, 2018. Classes run from 9 AM – 4:00 PM on the Sundays we have class.

This course offers the herbal enthusiast an opportunity to create medicinal formulas using healing herbs and food. You will learn the practical application of herbs in the treatment of illness and common health issues. We will spend time discussing the reasons, methods and techniques used to make each product. The focus is creating healing remedies for all issues, disease symptoms and system tonics. As we use the many herbs needed to restore balance we discuss their actions and phytochemicals. This is a fun, hands-on, laboratory style program and herbal products are taken home each month to begin your own Herbal Apothecary.

This training is for anyone who wants to learn about the powerful healing properties of plants, how to craft herbal medicines, how to cook healing foods, and how to identify and use the plants around us to support well-being. No prior herbal knowledge, cooking skills or medical training is required, although this course allows chefs, medical professionals, health coaches, yoga teachers and holistic healers to take their offerings to the next level. If you are interested in also taking the Foundations course that occurs on Saturdays of the same weekends, we offer a discount to combine both courses.

Dessert & Wine - Is it possible to pair desserts with wine? Better be careful, some of these flavors are in definite conflict. While you may be hard pressed to find anyone upset with the wrong wine & dessert pairing (it is wine and dessert after all) it is nice to show off a little knowledge when entertaining guests. Come try desserts and wines and learn why some do and some do definitely not go well together.

Speak Up! Effectively Share Your Story in Any Situation

You’re
passionate about your cause and the people who make the mission a
reality. You want to share the news with the world! But sometimes
anxiety about performing in public or a deep-seated fear of public
speaking can get in your way.

Even
if you’re okay with planned presentations (with lots of practice!),
when asked to spontaneously speak on your feet or requested to “say
a few words” about your organization, sometimes your mind seems to
go blank. What might have been a golden opportunity to make a
favorable impression can pass if you can’t speak up with a
compelling message.

Join
speaking coach Norma Thatcher in learning how to overcome anxiety and
nervousness related to speaking in public and receive practical tips
on becoming a “practiced” impromptu speaker. This workshop is
perfect for any member of your organization that speaks in public for
your nonprofit’s mission, or someone who would like to improve his
or hers public speaking skills.

Participants
will learn:

	Science-based
information on the importance of proper breathing related to
	speaking

Ideas
	to calm and center ourselves

Patterns
that can let us quickly respond to off-the-cuff questions

Cues
to focus on delivering great answers to unexpected questions

Presenter:

Thatcher, LIFTED
UP

Free to any nonprofit staff, volunteers, or board members in northern Culpeper, Fauquier, or Rappahannock counties.

Trees, Barks and Autumn Fruits

Since the beginning of time, trees have given us shelter, shade, food, tools, and beauty. Some of their medicinal gifts include remedies for cough, congestion, parasites, inflammation, rashes, etc.

Join us for a tree identification walk through the Blue Ridge Mountains, beside the streams and along the roadside, as we identify both the native and invasive trees of our region. We will delve into the magic, medicine, and distinguishing characteristics of Pine, White Oak, Wild Cherry, Tulip Poplar, Sassafras, Sweetgum, Mimosa, Black Walnut, and other trees in our area.

The second half of the day will be hands-on medicine making from the gifts of the trees. Teresa Boardwine, Registered Herbalist with the American Herbalist Guild, will discuss proper methods of harvesting bark, roots, leaves, and flowers. We will end the day together with a guided Tree Meditation to broaden one’s connection to the magic as we seek to communicate with and learn from our tree allies.

Come join us for a fun class as we explore trees, barks, nuts and the fruits of Fall. We might even hug some trees!
