Heritage Springs Orchard, Amissville

Steve & Victoria Miller grow over 34 apple varieties that were popular before 1900. Some trace their origin to Roman times; others were common to colonial America and 17th century Europe; and still others were the choice in Victorian America.

High Places Orchards, Flint Hill

Ed Streapy has pick-your-own apples (14 varieties) including Granny Smith and Ginger Gold, as well as peaches, nectarines and plums. Picnic by the pond with a view of Rattlesnake Mountain.

Jenkins Orchard, Woodville

Pull up to the green and white packing shed for the Jenkins' family's fresh-picked apples (16 types including Rambo and Blacktwig). From their 50-acre orchard come peaches (12 types, white and yellow), pears (6 types) and nectarines.

Lee's Orchard, Washington

These farms have been in the Lee family since the 1880s. The farm on Rt. 211 has pick-your-own and fresh-picked apples (28 kinds) including Albemarle Pippin, Jonagold and Mutsu, plus hard-to-find quince, peaches and pears. In the fall the Lees feature cider, honey and pumpkins.

Moore's Orchard, Washington

Stop at Louis Moore's farm for fresh-picked apples (9 types including Ozark Gold and Arkansas Black); peaches (5 types, white and yellow); plums; sweet cherries; peppers and heirloom tomatoes. Also: Local honey from Admiral's Apiary. Bring containers.

Open daytime, mid-July to Nov. 1.
