About:

They are the ‘original’ steeplechase. Started in 1752 in Ireland, steeplechasing followed the colonists from Great Britain to America and steeplechasing has taken place in the U.S. ever since.

Virginia has the most steeplechases, and point-to-points, in the nation — there are 18 hunt-sponsored point-to-points held each spring.

Point-to-points, barely differ from National Steeplechase Association sanctioned races. The sport is the same — races over hurdles, timber and on the flat — and the participants are largely the same group of owners, trainers, riders and horses. The only difference are the prizes — the point-to-point circuit is known as the ‘pots and pans circuit’ as the only award to the winner at a point-to-point is a silver trophy. NSA races, in contrast, offer purse money ranging from $5,000 to $250,000.
