Wineries, Distilleries, and Breweries

Clinging to our stony hillsides, the vineyards of Rappahannock produce a generous crop of native American, hybrid, and vinifera grapes with each harvest. Each winery's tasting room offers sampling opportunities, light foods, wines and wine accessories for sale. Rappahannock County also is home to Wasmund's single malt whiskey at the Copper Fox Distillery in Sperryville, where scheduled tours and presentations offer insight into the distilling process, and to the Hopkins Ordinary Ale Works, also in Sperryville.

Chester Gap Cellars

On top of the world. That’s where you will be when you visit Chester Gap Cellars at the northern tip of beautiful Rappahannock County. Bring your senses to life sipping truly great, hand-crafted wines while enjoying stunning views from our open-air tasting patio.

At over 1,000 feet elevation and conveniently located just off of Route 522 near Front Royal and I-66, Chester Gap Cellars is your perfect destination to experience a tranquil, intimate and friendly place. Put your feet up while tasting estate-grown Viognier, Roussanne, Petit Manseng, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and innovated blends. Let your eyes feast the natural beauty of lovingly tended vines and the endless blue mountains of the southeast Piedmont.

What is the wine all about at Chester Gap Cellars? A commitment to grow the highest quality grapes through minimal intervention, which produce full flavor, handcrafted wines. High elevation, an eastern exposure, well-drained rocky soils, nearly frost-free conditions, and cooler summer days and nights all add to grapes that can hang in the vineyard until optimal ripeness is achieved.

The result? We welcome you to come taste for yourself.

About the owners:

Jeff Seese and Travis Patton purchased Chester Gap Cellars in September 2017, and they strive to continue the legacy of high quality wines paired with the beautiful land and picturesque views that the winery offers.  We look forward to an opportunity to chat with you in our tasting room.

Copper Fox Distillery

Copper Fox Distillery, was founded by Rick Wasmund, with the idea of making whisky differently. The first North American distillery to build a traditional malt floor and kiln since the repeal of Prohibition. We start from scratch--floor malting our locally grown barley, flavoring the grain with fruitwood smoke in our kiln, distilling in one of our custom copper pot stills, then aging with a progressive series of hand toasted wood chips in used bourbon barrels.

Our on-site offerings include Copper Fox Original Single Malt Whisky, Copper Fox Peachwood Single Malt Whisky, Copper Fox Rye Whisky, Copper Fox Vir Gin, Copper Fox Barrel Kits and “Distiller’s Art Series” Single Malt Spirit, Rye Spirit and Bourbon Mash,  Belle Grove 1797 Whiskey and Belle Grove 1797 Spirit and several “distillery only” seasonal or limited edition whiskies.

We hope you can plan to visit and maybe discover your new favorite whisky! We do some things differently than anyone else in the world, and enjoy sharing our story.  Free tours on the half hour. Pen Druid Brewing

Pen Druid Brewing focuses on wild fermentation, barrel fermenting and aging, traditional spontaneous fermentation and naturally carbonated beers. The brewery is owned and operated by the three brothers Lain, Van and Jennings Carney who are in the psych-rock band Pontiak.

The brothers have spent nearly a decade traveling North America and Europe, playing music and experiencing the local beer traditions. They've released 11 albums on the legendary Chicago independent record label Thrill Jockey Records. In between tours they would brew beer at home.

The name, Pen Druid, comes from their old family farm which sits on the Thornton River in Rappahannock County, Virginia, just a few miles downstream from the brewery.

In the winter 2015/2016 the brothers isolated their own cocktail of wild yeasts and bacteria from the Virginia Piedmont reflecting the terroir of Rappahannock. And in that spirit of capturing the terroir of the Rappahannock Piedmont, the brothers also began their spontaneous fermentation program which employ two copper-lined coolships.

Pen Druid is a 10bbl woodfired brewery. All kegs and bottles are naturally carbonated using secondary fermentation in the bottle or the keg.
